About Gemma's Hope
Gemma’s Hope is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to providing bereavement resources to hospitals and hope to families experiencing pregnancy and infant loss.
Our story began with Gemma Hope Shaw, born in Charlotte weighing just 1 lb 3 oz. Gemma passed away from a rare congenital kidney anomaly, but her impact began immediately. Her parents, Kyle & Ally Shaw, wanted to honor her life in a way that would directly help other families walking through the loss of a baby.
In 2022, they donated grief books written by other bereaved parents, along with brochures for local counseling, nonprofit support, and online resources — all presented on a small rolling cart so they could be brought directly into hospital rooms. Each family received these items with the message:
“You are not alone — your baby is loved and remembered.”
Friends and family were inspired, and soon, others wanted to bring a “cart” to their local hospitals. Gemma’s Hope was born, and the Bereavement Book Cart Program was launched.
Today, Gemma’s Hope supports 40+ Book Carts in 14 states, most funded by local bereaved families honoring their babies’ legacies.
